FPGA signal processing: from algorithm to hardware

Turn parallel processing, latency and expandability requirements into a practical board checklist.

FPGA signal processing: from algorithm to hardware

Begin with the data path

Define channel count, incoming throughput, operations per sample and output deadline before choosing a board. Equal sampling rates do not imply equal memory or processing requirements.

Parallelism with a purpose

FPGA DSP blocks provide dedicated arithmetic resources. A pipeline can keep different stages working on different samples. Actual latency still depends on clocks, implementation and transfers.

A practical shortlist

  • Input and output bandwidth, including margin
  • Memory, buffering and channel synchronization
  • Logic and DSP utilization after a prototype build
  • Development tools and hardware test access

Prototype a representative processing chain and measure its throughput before committing to a platform.
